A dire warning has been issued by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as measles cases surge across the Americas, with Mexico bearing the brunt of the outbreak. This urgent call to action couldn't come at a more critical time, as the region prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an event that could potentially exacerbate the spread of the disease.
The situation is particularly concerning given the recent loss of measles-free status by Canada, a development that the United States and Mexico are at risk of mirroring. Both countries have requested a two-month extension to contain their respective outbreaks, but the Trump administration's withdrawal from the World Health Organization, the parent agency of PAHO, has complicated matters further.
The latest data paints a bleak picture: in the first three weeks of 2026 alone, PAHO confirmed a staggering 1,031 new measles cases across seven countries, a 43-fold increase compared to the same period last year. Mexico leads the way with 740 cases, followed by the United States (171) and Canada (67).
The state of Jalisco in western Mexico has recorded the country's highest incidence rate this year, following major outbreaks in Chihuahua and neighboring Texas last year. In the United States, South Carolina has become a new hotspot, prompting a shift in public health attention.
In response, the Mexican government has been actively urging the public to receive the two-dose vaccine, even establishing mobile vaccination clinics in high-traffic areas like airports and bus terminals. In the capital, Mayor Clara Brugada has launched an ambitious campaign, setting up 2,000 new vaccination modules this week.
"Everyone under 49 years of age, please get vaccinated," Brugada emphasized, highlighting the accessibility of the vaccine throughout the city. The new modules are strategically placed outside health centers and within major subway stations, ensuring maximum reach and bringing the campaign directly to the city's busiest transit corridors.
PAHO's alert comes after a year of sustained growth in measles cases, the highest in five years, driven by a global resurgence and persistent immunization gaps. Adolescents and young adults account for the largest volume of cases, but the highest incidence rates are among children under the age of one, underscoring the critical need to reinforce second-dose coverage.
The regional data is equally concerning: only 33% of countries have reached the 95% threshold for the first vaccine dose, and a mere 20% have achieved it for the second dose.
