Universal Profile 3.0 is bringing a game-changer: support for the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. This means that RCS chats between Android and iOS users can now be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), ensuring your conversations remain private and secure. To check if a chat is E2EE, simply long-press on a message and head to the 'Details' page. Look for the 'Encryption Protocol' section - a value of '1' indicates the new MLS encryption.
Read Receipts Get a Makeover
Following the 2023 redesign, read receipts are getting another refresh. Now, they're displayed in a circle at the bottom right of message bubbles and images. Swipe left to see all timestamps and encryption status, and swipe right to reply or quote a message. This feature started rolling out in August 2024, with more users getting it in November. And in January 2025, Google gave the design a twist, making the circular background white to ensure read receipts stand out even more.
Camera Tweaks and a Bigger FAB
Google has reduced the height of the camera viewfinder, but it now extends into the status bar, giving it a more integrated look. Google is making it easier to manage group chats. When invited by an unknown number, you'll see an alert card with options to quickly 'Leave group', 'Block', or 'Report'. The card provides details about the unknown sender and the number of people in the conversation, and Messages will even note if anyone you know is part of the thread.
Image Viewer Gets a Redesigned Look
Google has rolled out a new design for the Messages image viewer. This full-screen interface features a blurred background and the ability to swipe left or right.
