Course of Fate's 'Behind the Eclipse' - A Progressive Metal Odyssey (2026)

The Long-Awaited Return of Course of Fate: A Progressive Metal Odyssey

After an agonizing seventeen-year wait, Norwegian progressive metal pioneers, Course of Fate, have graced us with not one, but three full-length albums since 2020. I must admit, I missed their sophomore release in 2023, but as I write this, I'm thrilled to witness their resurgence.

Their previous album, Mindweaver, was a masterpiece that left us yearning for more. It buzzed with potential, and now, with Behind the Eclipse, they've proven that their talent is as sharp as ever.

But here's where it gets controversial... Course of Fate has evolved, and their sound has taken a more aggressive turn. The guitars, masterfully played by Kenneth Henriksen and Fredrik Jacobsen, are louder and edgier, while Torstein Guttormsen's bass provides a solid foundation throughout the album. The band's signature style, a heavy backdrop with lush drumming and melodic riffs, remains, but even the vocals, delivered by Eivind Gunnesen, have taken on a more aggressive tone, with growls adding an extra layer of intensity.

The songwriting is meticulous, with quiet keys and strings adding depth. The lyrics, especially in tracks like "Behind the Eclipse," tell stories of frustration and sorrow, yet the music remains lively and captivating. Take "Acolyte," for instance; it starts with a quiet piano intro, building up to an aggressive, thrash-inspired riff. Gunnesen's vocals are powerful, and the chorus is an emotional rollercoaster. Then, just as you think you've caught your breath, the song shifts again, showcasing Course of Fate's dynamic range.

And this is the part most people miss... Behind the Eclipse is an album of contrasts. It's a melancholic journey with moments of fiery passion. The closer, "Neverwhere," is a perfect example of this, building from bitter reflections to soaring heights. It's a Course of Fate trademark, and once again, the ballad, "Don't Close Your Eyes," is a standout track.

However, there are a few instances where the balance between aggression and melancholy feels slightly off. "Sky Is Falling" is intense, perhaps a bit too much for some, while "Hiding from the Light" takes a slower approach, which might lead you to question their musical direction. But fear not, for these moments are few and far between. The guitar solo in "Sky Is Falling" is a highlight, and the growls in "Hiding from the Light" add a unique twist.

Course of Fate has delivered an impressive progressive metal album that will keep you engaged from start to finish. With eight tracks spanning forty-five minutes, it's a journey worth taking. Behind the Eclipse is a well-crafted, emotional release that showcases their growth as musicians.

So, have Course of Fate lived up to the hype? I'd say they've exceeded expectations. This album is a testament to their skill and a sign of great things to come. Rating: 3.5/5.0
