The Pressure Cooker: Filming F1 on Race Weekend
Apple has unveiled a captivating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creation of the F1 movie, which premiered globally on Apple TV on December 12th. This feature takes us on a journey to the legendary Silverstone Circuit, where the production team faced an extraordinary challenge: filming during a Grand Prix weekend.
Imagine stepping into the shoes of Brad Pitt, who portrays the character of Sonny Hayes, a driver in the movie. On his first day of filming, Pitt found himself in front of a massive crowd of 120,000 fans at Silverstone, an experience he describes as "absolutely surreal."
Damson Idris, who stars alongside Pitt as the young racing driver Joshua Pearce, shared his own awe-inspiring moment: "We knew we would create something timeless."
But here's where it gets controversial...
The director, Joseph Kosinski, fresh off the success of Top Gun: Maverick, took on the ambitious task of bringing the world of Formula 1 to life on screen. By securing unprecedented access to the championship and the FIA, Kosinski aimed to capture the energy and immersion that sets this movie apart from other racing films.
"Silverstone is hallowed ground for Formula 1 fans," Kosinski explained. "The first F1 race was held here, and the history is palpable. Without our tight partnership with Formula 1 and the access they granted us, this film simply wouldn't have been possible."
Pitt added, "I remember feeling like we were stepping into a revered sport. We wanted to ensure we didn't disrupt the flow of the race weekend."
And this is the part most people miss...
The filming process was an intricate dance, taking place within the tight schedule of a live race weekend. Every moment counted, and the team had to execute their shots perfectly within the limited timeframes.
In one scene, Pitt and Idris joined the 20 drivers on the grid as the national anthem played. With just one take, the pressure was immense.
"I had Brad on my left and Verstappen on my right," Idris recalled. "I was anxious about getting it right. I even asked Brad about the protocol for singing the anthem in a race suit!"
Despite the stress, the weekend was a triumph for Kosinski and his team.
"It was one of the most intense days of my career," Kosinski said. "The energy, the cars, standing next to the F1 drivers, and having Brad and Damson there... it was a moment I'll cherish forever."
